I want to pass along a bit of recent news pertaining to ADD as well as to one of my favorite things in life, coffee. Now, I do want to stress that this is a press release. As an ex-publicist I will make no attempt to cover up when something is a press release. This one comes from a company called Tastes of the World that specializes in rare gourmet coffees, including one that is pre-digested by the creature on the left and sells for $175 a bag. In case you weren't paying attention, I said pre-digested, creature, $175. Makes Dunkin Donuts sound like a dream, doesn't it?
Now, as far as my relationship with coffee goes, I guess you could call it excessive. I have 20 oz. every morning, backed up by 8 oz. in the afternoon and another 12 oz. after dinner. That's about 875 mg of caffeine from coffee alone (not counting my Diet Coke habit) -- almost twice the maximum daily allowance of 450 mg a day.
Since I don't have ADD, the only thing coffee does for me is keep me from falling asleep at my desk or in the car. For Jen, who has a similar coffee addicition, coffee helps her focus and engage -- in work, in conversation, on driving, etc. Even though it has different effects on each of us, we both use coffee as a crutch, especially first thing in the morning, as I'm sure many of you do. And I'm sure you, like Goldilocks, like it just right. For Jen, this means she has to make her own. I make it too strong, fill the mug too high, and don't put enough cream. ADD people are fussy like that.
