My college roommate used to get a kick out of saying to people, "You're special. Just like everyone else." Even though it's a joke, it's true. Not to sound like Mr. Rogers, but everyone is special, in their own way. Everyone has something unique to offer to the world.
My understanding of people with ADD is that they always feel special -- sometimes in a good way, sometimes not. Frequently singled out as children for their idiosyncrasies, ADDers transition into adulthood feeling different from everybody else. Sure, ADD has its challenges. Organization and time management come to mind. But the specialness of ADD comes in the form of creativity, big picture thinking, and drive.
So naturally, when you look at history, there's plenty of evidence suggesting that a number of FDP's (Famous Dead People) had ADD, and used it to their advantage.
Think about it. Thomas Edison. The man went through 10,000 crappy semi-light bulbs before creating the light bulb we all use today. His friends thought he was off his rocker, but clearly he was hyperfocused. He started inventing the light bulb and he couldn't stop until he succeeded.
Benjamin Franklin. A man so determined to harness electricity that he stood outside during a lightening storm holding a metal object. Remind you of anyone you know?
The one I can't wrap my head around is Abraham Lincoln. I've heard rumors that Honest Abe was ADD Abe but I simply can't picture it. The man was, what? seven feet tall? Plus the hat? I see him standing at the podium, tapping one foot while delivering the Gettysburg Address. "Four score and seven years ago...shit...hang on...Mary, did you bring my index cards?"
