I just finished reading an article in the Indy Star about schools receiving grants to incorporate outdoor activities like gardening into their curriculum. I think it's a fantastic idea. And they're saying it helps alleviate some negative ADD symptoms:
"Now nature experts in Indiana and nationwide are building a campaign around a theory that exposure to fresh air, greenery and animals can reduce children's attention-deficit and behavioral problems." (Indianapolis Star, 4/22/06)
I'm no authority on children, but I do live with one ADDult and one ADDog who both thrive outdoors. It's usually me whining, "Can we go inside yet?" There is something about simply being outside that invigorates Jen and can actually turn her whole mood around. She tells me that a lot of ADD people feel revived when they spend time outdoors. I've heard good things about the sun, so maybe that's it. Or maybe it's the lack of walls and a ceiling to box them in. Still, it could be the exercise - walking, gardening, etc. that people do outside. Whatever it is, it helps. So go outside!
