Every year at this time, Jen reminds her clients and newsletter subscribers to take care of themselves during the holidays. It's very easy and very common for ADDers to buckle under the pressure of shopping, wrapping, decorating, cooking, card writing, and of course, visiting the relatives. But what is that laundry list really about, when you look closely at it?
I will confess, I wanted the first Christmas in our new house to bleed Currier & Ives. I wanted an outdoor light display with animatronic reindeer. I wanted to start my non-existent nutcracker collection with antique nutcrackers from Germany. I wanted glass ornaments from Restoration Hardware. I wanted the dogs to get their picture taken with Santa.
But I quickly relinquished my Christmas fantasy when I realized the volume of work it would take to pull off a Martha Stewart holiday. Seriously, who has that kind of time? Our outdoor lights don't work. Those moving reindeer are $65 each. I compromised on the nutcrackers and pilfered my mother's old one with the broken arm (Made in China). We bought a pre-lit artificial tree and decorated it with only the ornaments we already had (all six of them). The dogs would have killed Santa, for sure. And Jen would kill me if I insisted on turning Christmas into a Hallmark Channel special.
So why did I start out so hell bent on the perfect Christmas? I think I wanted to impress other people. I wanted to say to the world, "Happy Holidays! My life is completely together! Have a great New Year!" And I'm glad I came to my senses. The holidays are about family, nostalgia, and (I won't lie to you) presents. So relax and enjoy!
